Whitehall: What Next?

Thursday 23 November 2017

OVERVIEW

The Whitehall: What Next? event was a senior-level morning seminar held on behalf of Cardiff City Council for Central Government and Public Bodies. The seminar was designed to stimulate debate and discussion around the big issues of the day, including Article 50, Digital Transformation and Investment in UK Industrial Strategy. It was an opportunity to share the latest thinking and the opportunities currently being explored, looking to deliver integrated responses to these challenges. This was a forum for leaders in public sector change and delivery programmes in Whitehall, to examine three interlinked policy areas and how they can be translated into successful implementation.

The three interlocking themes for the discussion are:

  • Impact of Brexit on Whitehall – Led by the Institute for Government, who have recently published the paper “The Civil Service after Article 50”. This discussed how the delivery cycle of the civil service needs to adapt in near term and long term adaptation of the Whitehall machine.
  • Investment in an Industrial Strategy – Alexandra Jones, Director of Industrial Strategy at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Andrew Carter, Chief Executive of Centre for Cities spoke on how Departments and Public Bodies can cluster, collaborate and contribute to make government and national institutions more reflective of regions, industry and individuals they serve.
  • Fulfilment of Transformation programmes – Paul Orders, Chief Executive of Cardiff City Council presented how Local Government and Central Government visions are converging around the development of a 21st century public service hub that places talent attraction and development at its heart.
